Surface design in pottery:
As humans, we are constantly gathering information through visual information we receive by virtue of what we see. Colour has a strong presence in all we see. Ceramics has its fair share of various surface design techniques, from bright colours to muted glazes, from hand painting to decal prints. Lot of times, the clay itself is designed as a surface decoration. As a professional designer/maker, I have explored various surface techniques in ceramics. I have been practising Sgrafitto in my designs for many years now. And lately, I have been exploring Majolica, a ceramic surface painting technique.
Also pronounced as Mah-yo-lee-caa, this technique originated from Spain and in recent times, has roots in English, Italian and American Majolica. The difference lies mainly in the glaze types. This workshop will centre around combining Sgrafitto with Majolica techniques of surface design. We will draw inspiration from colours around us in everyday life.
