Level: Intermediate (you must know how to use a sewing machine)

In this fun one day workshop you will create a sewn seascape using scraps of fabric and free machine embroidery. You will learn about compositions and how to layer and combine together strips of fabric to create a tranquil scene, adding texture and interest with a variety of different materials and sewn details through hand sewing and free machine embroidery on your sewing machine.  There will be plenty of demonstrations and hands on assistance.

Lots of sample images will be available, but you may like for example, to base your piece on a sunset or sunrise or perhaps something you have captured on holiday or in a special place. The image is just the starting point, as your piece will naturally develop and change slightly as you work with the fabric, so don’t worry if you don’t have a specific image to work from. To finish the piece, it can either be wall hung or framed. Frames can be purchased at an extra cost.

What to bring:

  • Strips/scraps of fabric which are colours associated with the sea (I have lots available to use)

  • Scraps of hessian, lace, string

  • Buttons and embroidery thread

  • A sewing machine which has a free machine foot

  • Bondaweb (Approx A3 size)

  • Approx A3 size plain cotton (this will be used as a backing fabric and not seen, so an old sheet for example is fine)

  • A packed lunch

Included on the day:

  • All other materials not specified for students to bring

  • Expert tuition

  • 1 to 1 guidance

  • Detailed demonstrations

  • A selection of tea, freshly brewed coffee, biscuits and delicious cakes. If you have any specific dietary requirements or allergies, please feel free to bring along your own provisions/milk alternatives etc.

And of course you take your wonderful creations from the day. If you share any photographs of your day here and/or your finished work, we’d love to see them so please tag us @micklemsfarmcreativeworkshops or use the hashtag #micklemsfarmcreativeworkshops.
