Learn how to make 2 styles of soft cover leather books, including a little book with ribbon closure, and a Midori style traveller notebook with removable inserts. For the ribbon close book we will first prepare the inside pages of the book and will cut the leather to size. There will be a demonstration of laminating the inside of the leather with a decorative paper. We will then make the holes for sewing and will sew the pages into the cover using a simple exposed stitch book binding technique, finishing off with eyelets and ribbon close. The traveller’s style notebook will begin with cutting out the leather cover, and then using a range of different papers to make 3 inserts using your choice of papers and pamphlet stitch binding. There will be an explanation of how to accommodate 1, 3, or 5 removable inserts.

Students to bring: Scissors. Basic drawing tools: pencil, eraser, sharpener. Cutting tools: cutting mat (A3 minimum, or larger if you have it), sturdy cutting or craft knife (please make sure it has a sharp blade so it will cut leather cleanly), metal ruler. The following tools can be borrowed from the tutor but if you have them please bring them to avoid the need for sharing: Bone folder (for creasing paper), Small awl / braddle (for making holes in paper and card), Paper knife / clip knife / shoe knife (for slicing paper).
